AWARENESS OF THE UNBORN
Mr. Hubbard’s discoveries on the mind and life have also touched those who care for the unborn. Prior to 1950, prevailing theory held that the human child was incapable of recording memory until the formation of myelin sheathing at the age of about four years. The only exception being speculative ideas about “birth trauma” heard on the psychoanalytic fringe.
Then came this from L. Ron Hubbard: “The only test is whether or not a fact works. If it does work and can be used, it is a scientific fact. And the prenatal engram is a scientific fact. Tested and checked for objective reality, it still stands firm. And as for subjective reality, the acceptance of the prenatal engram as a working fact alone makes possible the Clear.”
The ensuing years represented a silent revolution in popular thought: from “everybody knows” the unborn child sees, hears and feels nothing, to the virtually universal notion that mothers should take care to avoid harmful stimuli.
Once again, the ramifications of a bold new idea were considerable, heartening and flew squarely in the face of the broadly accepted fallacy that a man was only sentient in proportion to his physical development and that his emotions were wholly the result of biological chemistry. Carried along by the acceptance which continued to be generated by Dianetics, it was not long before Mr. Hubbard’s revolutionary finding began to seep into the fabric of mainstream society.
