The Purification program provided more than just a solution to society’s growing problem of drug abuse. It could also be used to combat the threat posed by our polluted environment made increasingly toxic through widespread use of pesticides, chemical contamination and the gradual erosion of the ozone layer.

In 1984, a Rand Corporation study estimated that by the year 2020, more than 75,000 American workers would die as a result of workplace exposure to toxic materials. A solution was obviously needed. A number of scientific studies were subsequently conducted to determine how effective Mr. Hubbard’s methods were in addressing the problem of environmental contamination. In 1984, the Journal of California Law Enforcement reported that Purification had significantly aided police officers exposed to toxic chemicals to rid their bodies of such substances. Two years later, a report published by the Royal Swedish Academy of Science told of similar results with poisoned chemical workers. Soon, the news of these innovative studies began to appear in more widely distributed occupational safety newsletters.
