RESTORING SOCIETY’S MORAL ANCHOR

Educational failures, rampant drug abuse and rising rates of crime and violence, though catastrophic, in and of themselves are symptoms of a deeper malaise affecting the social fabric of our culture – the loss of moral values.

The collapse of ethical standards walked hand in hand with the pronouncement that man had no soul. That is, if man’s destiny was predetermined by a few strands of DNA, he was thus absolved of any responsibility for his own actions. “If it feels good, do it,” became a rallying cry for a generation which was soon taking issue with any and all forms of morality. Time magazine announced that God was dead and religion passé. The result was a society cut free from any moral anchor. Even those who wished to stem this tide found themselves balked. As one popular magazine bemoaned, “Suppose for a moment that we wish to obey the rules: What do they mean and where are they written?”
